{"id":6564,"date":"2023-01-05T10:05:40","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T10:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.accsysplc.com\/accoya-fender-shows-outstanding-resilience-in-river-thames-london\/"},"modified":"2023-01-05T10:05:40","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T10:05:40","slug":"accoya-fender-shows-outstanding-resilience-in-river-thames-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.accsysplc.com\/nl\/accoya-fender-shows-outstanding-resilience-in-river-thames-london\/","title":{"rendered":"Accoya\u00ae fender shows outstanding resilience in River Thames, London"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Environment Agency specifies additional Accoya fenders\nafter trial shows outstanding durability and sustainability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine\nfenders installed along the Thames beside the famous Cutty Sark<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a successful\ntrial the Environment Agency\u2019s TEAM 2100 has chosen to commission and install a\nfurther nine Accoya fenders along the banks of the Thames. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TEAM2100 is the\nEnvironment Agency\u2019s 10-year programme to refurbish and replace tidal flood\ndefences in London and the Thames Estuary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, the\nEnvironment Agency agreed to trial and test an Accoya fender at Duke Shore\nWharf, with wood being donated by Accsys via International Timber. The Agency\nwas looking for a resilient, stable and durable alternative to hardwood that\ncould offer improved sustainability credentials whilst continuing to promote a\nhealthy and diverse marine habitat.&nbsp; The fenders are an essential part of\nflood risk management assets in the Thames Estuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After two years of\npositive performance at Duke Shore Wharf the Environment Agency has commissioned\nnine further fenders at Deptford Walls, Greenwich. These fenders were installed\nin September 2022. To provide biodiversity benefits, the innovative design for\nthe nine new fenders, created by Glasgow University and Kings College London,\nincluded habitable spaces for marine life (see diagram).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/Design-drawing-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/Design-drawing-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/Design-drawing-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/Design-drawing-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/Design-drawing-450x252.jpg 450w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/Design-drawing-1200x673.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/Design-drawing.jpg 1402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChoosing materials\nthat are sustainable and that consider the effects of their production on the\nenvironment is a key goal of our flood risk management programme.&nbsp;\nCertification processes, such as the Cradle to Cradle Certified\u00ae Products\nProgram, help achieve this and permit identification of materials that consider\nthe effects of their production on the environment, minimise energy and water\nuse and aid social fairness. Finding a viable, sustainable substitute for\nhardwood has been an important goal of ours,\u201d&nbsp; said Dr Jo Guy, of the\nEnvironment Agency\u2019s TEAM2100, Environment and Sustainability Manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Alexander, Group Director of Sales, Accsys commented: \u201cThe Thames water is a tough environment with brackish salt water and active marine organisms, which rapidly degrade all but the most durable wood types. It\u2019s a real endurance test for a wood product and the performance is in line with our expectations after running sea trials of up to 13 years from the Pacific Ocean to the North Sea.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/New-innovative-fender-design-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/New-innovative-fender-design-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/New-innovative-fender-design-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/New-innovative-fender-design-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/New-innovative-fender-design-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/New-innovative-fender-design-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/wp-accsys-2025.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2023\/01\/New-innovative-fender-design-2000x1500.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The fenders are being\nused by the Environment Agency\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/thames-estuary-asset-management-2100-programme-team2100\">TEAM2100<\/a>&nbsp;programme\nas proof of concept that it can replace hardwood, provide habitat and\ncontribute to achieving the organisation\u2019s Circular Economy, Net Zero,\nEnvironmental Net Gain, and Social Value sustainability ambitions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regenerative design\nconsultancy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.540.world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">540 WORLD<\/a>&nbsp;worked with Accsys, Jacobs, Balfour Beatty and\nTEAM2100 to implement this important sustainability initiative, with a view to\nmore widespread substitution of slow-growing hardwood with fast-growing,\nrapidly carbon-sequestering and very durable Accoya. The lack of toxic or\nplastic-based additives to Accoya is vital to its use in these environments,\neliminating the risk of potential leaching into the water and environmental or\necological harm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each cubic metre of\nAccoya contains nearly one tonne of CO<sub>2<\/sub> absorbed by certified\nsustainable forests, which keeps that carbon safely stored for decades.
