The deck\nof the historic SS Great Britain in Bristol, UK is being replaced with Accoya.\nThe first decking boards made from Accoya were placed on the 4th<\/sup>\nDecember. Expected to take 32 weeks in total, the  project will see 6,050 metres of timber being\nfitted. The boards will weather to a stunning silver colour recreating the\noriginal colour of the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new\ndecking will help preserve the deck of the ship and the original ironwork that\nsits underneath.  Alongside the vital\nconservation work, the project will enable wheelchair and step-free access to\nevery area of the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SS Great Britain, Accoya decking: SS Great Britain Trust<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Designed\nby Brunel, the SS Great Britain is a museum ship<\/a> and\nformer passenger steamship<\/a> that\nwas advanced for her time. She was the largest passenger ship in the world from\n1845 to 1854, sailing around the world 32 times. The ship has been a visitor\nattraction since its return to Bristol in 1970. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conservation project is\nbeing carried out by the SS Great Britain Trust, funded by Arts Council England\nthrough the Museum Estate & Development Fund (MEND). The decking is being supplied\nby Robbins Timber.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
