Accoya Color brings nature’s healing powers to New Zealand landmark healthcare facility

January 6, 2026

Accoya Color cladding chosen at Palmerston North Accute Mental Health Unit for its natural aesthetics and durability.

The new Palmerston North Acute Mental Health Unit is setting a new benchmark for healthcare environments in New Zealand. Designed by CCM Architects & Jacobs the state-of-the-art facility on the North Island is designed to support faster recovery for mental health patients, with a focus on providing a therapeutic natural environment.

Material selection was central to the project’s vision. CCM Architects chose Accoya Color grey cladding, supplied by Hermpac, for its aesthetics and exceptional durability. The uncoated cladding features prominently on both the external façade and the internal courtyards, bringing the restorative qualities of nature into the heart of the building. These secure courtyards provide vital outdoor spaces for patients, supporting healing and connection with the environment.

Accoya Color comes with an industry-leading 50-year warranty, ensuing low-maintenance lifetime benefits for the hospital, meeting the demands of a public service building.

Feature walls in Accoya, finished in a lime green coating, complement the grey cladding and reinforce the facility’s therapeutic atmosphere.

John Alexander, Group Commercial Director, Accsys commented: “We are delighted to see Accoya specified for this important healthcare facility. Its longevity and durability will ensure the facility exterior can maintain its performance and appearance over time, supporting a resilient and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.”
