When designing the state-of-the-art training ground for the San Antonio Spurs, the team set out to create a space that placed biophilic design and athlete wellbeing at its core. Built for elite performers, the facility demanded materials capable not only of meeting technical requirements but also of inspiring the people who use it every day.
The result is the Victory Capital Performance Centre, the first mass timber training facility of its kind in US professional sport. From the outset, the project showcases the role of advanced wood technologies, with Accoya chosen as a key material in delivering both long-term performance and sustainability.
Designed by ZGF Architects, the 134,000-sq-ft complex demonstrates how low-carbon materials can meet the demands of a world-class athletic environment. The structure incorporates glulam beams and cross-laminated timber to create expansive, column-free NBA practice courts, dramatically cutting embodied carbon compared with steel or concrete while creating a warm, uplifting atmosphere for athletes and staff.
Accoya was chosen for the building’s external cladding due to its durability, dimensional stability, and proven performance in challenging climates. Finished by Delta Millworks in “Coastline,” the Accoya façade offers long-term resilience against Texas heat and humidity while maintaining a natural, clean appearance with minimal maintenance.
