The redevelopment of Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc Airport Terminal has given one of France’s most scenic regional airports a striking new architectural identity, replacing an aging façade with a contemporary timber design inspired by its Alpine surroundings. Accoya wood was selected for the new façade, where its durability, stability and design freedom helped bring the architect’s vision to life.
Located in Épagny Metz-Tessy, Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc Airport has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment of its terminal, originally constructed in the 1960s. Designed by VRA | Vincent Rocques Architecte for Vinci Airports, the project delivers a modern, resilient and environmentally responsible gateway to the Alps. As part of the transformation, approximately 200 m² of natural, uncoated Accoya cladding was specified to create the terminal’s distinctive new façade.
Creating a bold architectural statement required a material capable of delivering both design freedom and long-term performance in a demanding environment with freezing winters and warm summers.
For architect Vincent Rocques, Accoya had long been the preferred choice for its combination of durability, dimensional stability and low maintenance. “Accoya was chosen for its long-term durability, but also for the aesthetic possibilities it offers. The façade design is based on a highly legible, contemporary expression of wood that gives the building a strong identity.”
Low maintenance for long-term public infrastructure
For public-sector buildings, the cost and practical implications of maintenance are important considerations well beyond the construction phase. Maintaining façades can require access, labour and operational planning — particularly in an airport environment where day-to-day activity needs to continue with minimal disruption.
Accoya’s durability and stability, including a 50 year warranty, make it a suitable choice where long-term performance and reduced maintenance requirements are priorities.
